Looking out over an incredibly deep blue, stretching as far as the eye can see, visitors to Lake Titicaca could be forgiven for thinking they were standing before an ocean. But at 3,812 meters above sea level between the Peruvian and Bolivian highlands – the highest navigable lake in the world – the surreal feeling of high altitude surely keeps this thought in check.
Smoothing out the thin air, the steep landscape, the gentle lapping water aside, the fauna of the highlands - including the vicuña - and the indigenous populations that inhabit the lakes are some of the main attractions of Lake Titicaca. The folklore of these communities is often considered the richest in Peru with many notable religious celebrations occurring throughout the year.
Lake Titicaca is an incomparable place, its deep blue waters have been the source of legends for centuries. It is said that the waters gave birth to Manco Capac, who went to found Cusco with mother Ocllo, sinking his body into the earth and declaring the valley as the "Navel of the world."
Practical information for Lake Titicaca:
Access to the Peruvian part of the Lake can be from La Paz, by land and by boat; By plane from Lima, Arequipa or Cusco; By land from Colca or Cusco; Or by train from Cusco. To visit the lake, most people stay within the city of Puno; Rarely, however, do they suggest this as the city itself is not the most impressive and it is better to be outside of the city. We recommend one or two good hotels in Puno, as well as places in a more favorable location outside the city.
Most travelers who visit the Peruvian side of the lake only scratch the surface of what can be seen at Lake Titicaca. They visit only the most tourist destinations such as Uros and Taquile, some also reach Amantani, before leaving. It's not that we don't like these destinations - we certainly offer them - it's rather that there is so much more to find.
Another addition to the circuit is a visit on the way to or from Cusco, or a day trip to Pucara, Sillustani with a stop for lunch at the charming restaurant in Sicuani, the last town in Cusco.
If you arrive at Lake Titicaca by land from Cusco or Arequipa, we recommend that you travel through a rather spectacular section of the Andes. On the way, it is possible to pass through the town of Lampa and the attractions that surround it, such as the Tinajani canyon. Contact our travel advisors for more details.
During the drier seasons, May to October is ideal. Trips from November to March may include heavy downpours.
