Lima

Lima, The City of Kings

It's big, it's loud, it's crowded—in recent years Lima has developed a reputation for being a city that's a little chaotic.

However, just spend a few hours to scrape below the surface and you will discover another side of Lima, the capital of Peru, which is a metropolis full of unique opportunities and experiences. Lima was founded on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and is a city of great cultural and ethnic diversity. Currently, Lima has around 11,000,000 inhabitants and is the commercial, industrial and cultural center of the country, as well as the seat of government.

Rich in history, art and gastronomy, Lima's unique cosmopolitan nature is the result of a melting pot of different cultures and ethnic groups that arrived and settled in the coastal city from pre-Hispanic civilizations to waves of immigration from Asia and Europe through from the 19th – 20th centuries. Given this history and its coastal location, Lima offers a seemingly endless variety of experiences for travelers with all different interests from surfing on the shores to exploring the catacombs in the city's historic center.

Originally called the City of Kings, it was the capital of the Spanish colonial empire in South America during the 16th and 17th centuries and was the administrative center of a vast expanse of territory on the continent in colonial times. The ancient supremacy of the city is revealed in its well-preserved civil and religious buildings, such as the Monastery of San Francisco, the Torre Tagle Palace and the Cathedral, the bullring. The architecture reflects the fusion of native and Spanish styles with baroque mestizo buildings that give the historic center of Lima a different character.

However, Lima's origins predate the Spanish founding of the city by many centuries. An effort to study and preserve pre-Hispanic sites in recent decades has resurrected this forgotten past from Lima's past, and the city has been rediscovering its native roots. Travelers can get a sense of this long past by visiting ancient pilgrimage centers such as Pachacamac, or religious and administrative centers, called huacas, such as Huallamarca and Pucllana.

Practical information for Lima

A couple of days in Lima can be packed with visits to historical sites, the best restaurants, as well as some of the best museums, boutiques and galleries in Peru. As the capital and largest city of Peru, Lima offers excellent quality and variety of artifacts in stores and a myriad of restaurants where you can taste legendary Peruvian cuisine from all regions. In fact, trying some of the city's culinary delights is a must during a visit to Lima. Some of our recommendations are Central, Rafael, Astrid y Gastón, La Rosa Nautica and Los Pescados Capitales.

As in any city, especially one as large as Lima, you should take precautions when walking alone on the streets, such as not wearing flashy jewelry or clothing, leaving valuables and passports at the hotel, and being more careful when leaving after dinner. darkness. We don't recommend that first-time visitors to Lima go downtown after dark, but in the safer districts of Miraflores and San Isidro, walking the main streets at night is safe. In terms of transportation, we do not recommend that travelers try public transportation on their own, but instead use private transportation or use safe taxi services, which can be arranged through the hotel concierge.
